“It’s an extremely challenging time for our schools, but that doesn’t make the educating of our children less important.”
We must recognize that our “high-performing” district is in real danger of a precipitous decline if our community, in the face of massively declining state aid, does not support the schools both financially and otherwise.
Our students only have one shot at their educations. A child who is learning to read, or write, or learn calculus faces a far less promising outcome in a poorly equipped overcrowded classroom than they would in a properly equipped uncrowded classroom with a properly supported teacher.
My husband, Olin, and I have lived in Groton for 25 years. I began volunteering in the Groton Dunstable Schools even before my now 19-year old son, Ari, could walk. I have volunteered in many capacities at all grade levels, in roles from room parent, to Facilities Task Force Member, to school council member or chair (in 3 different schools). This has placed me in a good position to understand the schools, and to be an effective school committee member starting on day one. Most recently, I served on the 2009-2010 Superintendent Search Committee.
